Mobile App Critique
I adore Amazon and love using their app! It’s definitely one that I am familiar with, so I thought it would be the perfect subject for a critique. The app is user friendly as it is easy for anyone to just start using. It is well designed and makes it fairly simple to navigate. The app is also extremely functional and serves its purpose well. Overall, the Amazon app is a great tool for most users.
The app is easy to understand without any instructions. The app makes it easy to find the products I am looking for as well as giving options for similar products. The search function on this app is better than most. I’ve used it when I can’t remember the exact name of what I’m looking for as it will generally find the product with just some general phrases. I also use this app simply for the review option. When shopping in person, I often refer to this app to see how reliable the product I want to purchase is. A con with the usability of this app is the home button. If I’m searching through products and select the home button, it won’t take me to the homepage. Instead, I have to hit the home button 2-3 times in order to be navigated to the actual home page.
The design of the app is generally effective overall. Upon opening the app users are shown anything noteworthy, such as promotions or upcoming events. There is a dropdown menu at the top of the screen, making it easy to navigate. My main issue with the design is the homepage. I believe there is too much info and it becomes overwhelming. As you scroll through on the phone, it shows items that can be reviewed, items related to other items that have previously been purchased, items related to fashion, trends, workplace, etc… Despite the overabundance of information on the home page, it is a good starting point when working with this app.
The Amazon app is extremely functional. One of my favorite functions is the ability to switch between platforms with ease. I can add something to my cart from my phone and later log into my computer and have it be there still. One functions that isn’t always dependable is the Prime switch. When shopping, I always look for the prime shipping options and toggle that switch on. However, if a seller has multiple variations for a specific item, it could show as prime even if that option isn’t available. For instance, if I’m searching for a red shirt, the app can incorrectly show it as having prime shipping available because the blue shirt is available for prime shipping.
Overall, this is my go-to app whenever I need ideas or to find products. I enjoy using this app as it is often gives me the most inclusive results. The design is generally easy to navigate, making it a time-effective option. Being able to use this app across platforms and for multiple purposes makes it extremely functional. I highly recommend this app.
